Service with Legos

For Christmas my 7 year old son, Benjamin, got the submarine docking Lego kit of his dreams.  It is recommended for children ages 7-14 and as his birthday is on the 19th of December he was certain he would qualify for the kit.  His excitement was palpable when he opened the gift.  He later got out the needed containers to keep his parts all separated and began working diligently on following the building map at the kitchen table.  His older brother, Samuel, was doing the same thing on the other side of the table but with his Lego starship.  After about 45 minutes of diligent building it became clear that the build was just a bit more complicated than Benjamin was up for, so Samuel offered to work on it for a bit if Benjamin wanted to go do something else for awhile.  Samuel worked on Ben’s ship until it was dinner time and Ben was bouncing with gratitude that his brother would help him on his submarine.  After the boys were in bed I found my husband sitting at the table trying to get the submarine finished so that Ben could play with it in the morning.  He stayed up way past his own bedtime working until it was finished.  The joy and unbelief on Benjamin’s face and in his voice was overwhelming as he thanked his papa and his brother again for finishing building his kit.  It made me think of the parable of the bicycle.  Ben did all he could and his dad and brother stepped in to make up the difference.  I feel so blessed that my guys love and serve one another and that as family members we can emulate the Savior’s love for each other in our day to day lives.

A Dragon Against Manticore Army

Another story by the Comedian

Two-thousand manticores have been attacking the city.

A boy on a dragon have been attacking them but a sea monster and the manticores were too much for him on 2000 Main Street.  The dragon landed on the sea monsters head and the sea monster ate his own head trying to get him.  Now there are only 2000 manticores left to be beat.  One maticore have charged at the dragon.  The dragon and the human made it crazy.  The human grabbed onto the manticore's head and the dragon ate its horn.  When that one had been defeated all the other manticores attacked at the same time.  As easy as last time one big giant chicken flew and sat on all the manticores heads.  Then the dragon ate all the horns from the manticores while the big giant chicken was distracting them.  The city was safe once again....

Stay tuned for next time. . .
The Sea Monster WAS ATTACKING!!!!!  The dragon put fire on all the scales, then the dragon bite-ed off it’s tail.  The Sea Monster was furious!  So the Sea Monster was chasing the dragon around in circles.  It got tired off.  Then the dragon ate one spine off the Sea Monster above his eyes.

Stay tuned for the next adventure of the dragoN

The Secret of the Bionicle World (part one)

It has been quite awhile since I've included one of the Comedian's stories on here.  His creative powers have recently shifted from creatures unknown to most to the world of the Bionicle.  Any spelling errors are mine but the grammar and story are as he dictated it to me.

Without further ado, I present to you:

The Secret of the Bionicle World (part one)
created and dictated by the Comedian (age 6)

Once there were four Bionicles; gold, water, fire and leaf.  As the gold Bionicle sat in his chair with his golden medal he thought him could go out for a walk.  He walked through the mighty forest and at then end there was a pond.   And the water Bionicle under the sea said “oh no  crocodiles!”  The golden Bionicle sensed him was in there and used his golden power to lift him out of the sea.  As the crocodiles figure out him is gone them goed back into the surface of the pond.

The golden Bionicle thought him would go into a jungle so as him go-ed him found a bird.  The bird lifted him up to the top of the jungle.  But the golden Bionicle knew what to do he used his golden power to make a hole in the tree and a thing that them could bounce on.  Then the leaf Toa stopped them from bouncing and lifted them carefully off the bounce thing.

Then all three Bionicle thought them could go to the center of the earth to see what the fire Bionicle were doing.  So them go to the center of the earth and saw that them were doing a star show which would show who was the best-est fire Bionicle.  All the fire Bionicle said, “Hold Neutron!” because Neutron was the bestest fire Bionicle.

Then Neutron came to the surface of the earth with them and a big war began--The evil against the good.  Then in the battle them discovered that them could combine with each other and make a big huge Bionicle together.  After combining they were so powerful that they won the battle.  Then all four turned into golden Bionicle and the leader of the Glatorian asked where their habitat would be.  Them said we want the golden forest to be our habitat.  So they went there to live there.

Stay tuned for the next bionacle story. . .

Don't Eat Pete!

The Comedian was introduced to the wonderfully fun game of "Don't Eat Pete" in his Kindergarten class around Christmastime.  In fact they made Don't Eat Pete gameboards to bring home to their family as their gift.  So for New Years Eve one of the rousing games we played was. . . .you guessed it. . . .Don't Eat Pete!

He has brought it up and we've played different versions off and on.  We played with all of his friends at his birthday party.  Today we couldn't find the original Alien Pete gameboard or the mommy created Snowman gameboard so he put about 20 stickers on a piece of notebook paper and asked to play.

I was quite occupied with bread dough all over my hands so told him we'd have to wait a bit until the rolls were ready to rise.  When I was finished with the rolls I asked him what we were going to play with (for this game the game pieces are usually small pieces of candy) and he says, "Hmmm we are out of smarties, so how about macaroni!"

I replied, "I don't want to break my teeth, so how about Fruit Loops!"

And the game was on.  Now being 6 the Comedian's strategy skills are not the best.  So when he chooses which spot is "Pete" he stares at the spot without blinking.  It kind of takes the randomness and surprise out of the game.  So during one round I was trying really hard to just play how I would play if he were not sending laser beams through "Pete" and suddenly he looks up at me and says, "Are you reading my mind?  That's cheating you know!"

(We have previously had discussions about mind reading here)

My assurances that I was not and could not know read his mind did not mean a whole lot for on the very next round (it was my turn to choose "Pete") he sat down and after having his hands hover over each and every spot on the board, his eyes looking up to meet mine with each pause his hand darted out and grabbed "Pete"!

He decided that he would rather go and play with the Engineer because he had not yet learned all the tricks of mind reading.

And I had a really great laugh!

Happy Birthday to a Funny Boy!

Having grown up with a birthday in mid-December I know how important it is for everyone to remember that "My Birthday is NOT Christmas!"

So when the Comedian's birthday rolled around on Dec. 19th we packed everyone up and headed South to play in the snow with cousins and celebrate the new SIX year old in our family. It was a funfilled day that started off at Uncle Mark's and Aunt Tina's with spaghetti (his favorite meal of all time) followed quickly by sleigh riding down the hills of Peteetneet the Historical School where I attended Head Start as a young girl. From there we went to Grandma's house for presents, yummy cake, and Creamsicles (ice-cream on a stick). After much playing and fun we headed back home. All three boys were asleep before we had been on the road for half an hour and slept all the way home.

A few days later we had a group of friends come over for more sledding, exploring of the awesome snow-forts in the front yard, warming up with some hot chocolate aka Snowman Soup, cake and more Creamsicles. Then we decorated Snowman plates, played a rousing game of Don't Eat Pete followed by lots of fun building Lego creations.

Truly a wonderfully FUN celebration of a sweet boy turning Six!

Back to School

Well my engineer and comedian have headed back to school. Here they are as they head out the door on the first day. My engineer was pretty stoked and thought it was more awesome and cool that he was in second grade this year. The comedian was a little bit nervous and really glad that mom got to go with him for the first day!

The second day brought its own trauma when it came to light that the comedian hadn't understood that mom didn't get to go to class with him everyday. It is a good thing that he has such a great teacher and a good sense of humor. He got to tell his teacher a joke and then most things seemed right with the world, although there were still tear tracks down his cheeks as he walked away.

Some of the playtime of summer and spending all day long, everyday of the week with mom seems to have affected the engineer's recollection of the names of the days of the week. Check out his answer to problem #3 on the homework assignment below.

I'm afraid that I made him quite self-conscious when I started laughing and grabbed the camera while I was looking over his homework. But later after he had fixed it he told me "Mom, it is just because I missed you so much when I was at school!" Talk about turning my heart into mush!

My boys are growing up, but they still love and need me. What more could a mom ask for?

I wish we could watch Conference everyday!

I eagerly look forward to General Conference each October and April. Last October was no different. If anything I needed the spiritual renewal even more as I felt like my reserves; physically, emotionally and spiritually, were completely depleted. The end of September found me yearning for the messages from our dear prophet and other General Authorities to teach me and to remind me of those plain and precious truths which would help me on the pathway of refilling my lamp.

“For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:” (Proverbs 6:23)

I was also faced with the reality of three young active boys. My sons still being quite young at the ages of 6, 4 and 1 ½ years old don’t always comply with requests to be reverent. Most Sundays an hour in the chapel for Sacrament meeting is stretching the older boys’ abilities and Timothy rarely was able to remain in the chapel longer than it took the Sacrament to be passed. Certainly 2 days in front of the television for multiple hours quietly watching something other than cartoons on PBS was more dream than reality. When I shared my need and my concerns with my husband we both prayed for inspiration and guidance. The Monday morning before conference donned without either of us having any clear idea on what we could do differently than previous years to encourage a more reverent viewing of Conference. So I set about preparing as I had in years past; printed off Conference coloring pages from the Friend, looking through our Gospel Art Kit for pictures of the church leaders who would be speaking to share with the boys for Family Home Evening, and continuing to pray that it was enough or that one of us would be further inspired.

That evening after dinner we gathered in the living room and began Family Home Evening as planned. Partially through the lesson my 4 year-old, Ben, wanted to know where President Hinckley’s picture was. So I opened the binder to pull it out and as I was closing it the pages fell open to the picture of King Benjamin speaking to his people.

The thought came to my mind to share with them how the people gathered to listen to their prophet and king and how it was similar to what we would be doing soon. So after finishing our discussion on who we would be hearing speak at conference with a small side trip to remind the boys about how when President Hinckley “went to live with Father in Heaven” and President Monson was chosen as our new prophet I decided to nix the matching game I had planned and tell them the story of King Benjamin from the book of Mosiah.

“We inevitably must make choices. If we know the doctrines and principles of the gospel, we can make wise decisions. If our lives are pure, the Spirit will guide us. Then we will be able to symbolically pitch our tents toward the temple (see Gen. 13:18) and the covenants we have made to the Lord, and we will be in the world and not of the world.” ( Quentin L. Cook, “Lessons from the Old Testament: In the World but Not of the World,” Liahona, Feb 2006, 39–41)

When my husband asked the boys about the symbolism of the people of King Benjamin pitching their tents towards the temple, and who King Benjamin was to them the lesson really seemed to come alive. The boys really got involved in thinking of ways that our family could pitch our tents so that we could hear the important words spoken by our prophet. We decided that it probably wasn’t possible for all the members of the church to take their camping tents to Salt Lake and set them up around temple square to hear our prophet speak. However, there was no reason that we could not set up our camping tent in the living room of our home and have it pitched so that the door was toward the television set to help us remember that we needed to be looking and listening to the words of our church leaders because they had important information to impart to us. Thus Family Home Evening ended with two young boys very excited for the upcoming General Conference and myself and my husband wondering what we had gotten ourselves in for. Later that night, we decided that if their behavior was atrocious after the first session that we would take the tent down and resort to something else.

“And they pitched their tents round about the temple, every man having his tent with the door thereof towards the temple, that thereby they might remain in their tents and hear the words which king Benjamin should speak unto them;” (Mosiah 2:6)

Saturday morning for General Conference dawned with much excitement around our home. Following breakfast everyone eagerly pitched in to clean up the kitchen, move the necessary furniture, and assemble their pillows and blankets. The tent was pitched just in time for the last song from the Music and the Spoken word segment. All three boys practically flew into the tent to find their spots. I grabbed the clipboards, crayons and coloring pages prepared specifically for Conference and stashed them just outside the tent as I followed my husband inside. What happened next continues to surprise and amaze me. The older two boys were riveted to the television as President Monson welcomed us to Conference while 18 month old Timothy sat on my lap and clapped. About half way through I pulled out one coloring page and a few crayons for the older boys and Timothy quietly climbed on top of my husband and then slid down to the floor over and over again. Despite the fact that Conference began at 10 AM and Timothy’s usual naptime was also 10 AM he was well behaved and quiet for the entire first session. I was not only able to hear the messages but write down a few impressions I had from the talks.

The Saturday afternoon session was a bit more rowdy and I was beginning to think that the following day we would only use the tent for the morning session as the novelty seemed to have worn off. However, once a large bowl of cinnamon popcorn was brought in to share their hands and mouths were fully occupied and we heard wonderful messages on being a Zion people and the importance of Prayer. There was much disappointment and many attempts at talking us out of taking the tent down as the session ended. The boys were talking about the talk on being more reverent during Sacrament meeting, and ways in which they could be angels and help others. Their pleas to put the tent up continued long into our traditional dinner of nachos and only ended when they received a promise that before the morning session began it would be re-erected.

Come, listen to a prophet’s voice,
And hear the word of God,
And in the way of truth rejoice,
And sing for joy aloud.
We’ve found the way the prophets went
Who lived in days of yore.
Another prophet now is sent
This knowledge to restore.

(“Come, Listen to a Prophet’s Voice,” Hymns of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, no. 21)

Sunday brought remarkable a repeat of the previous days behavior. This time however Samuel began asking questions about the talks and asking how he could follow their counsel. Before long Benjamin was building and expanding on the questioning Samuel had begun. As Elder Quentin L. Cook told the story of his young son telling his mother, “Hope ya know, we had a hard time!” Samuel curled up next to me and told me that sometimes he feels like that too. As the strains of the final song ended we all bowed our heads for the closing prayer. Immediately following the speakers, “Amen”

I was offering yet another prayer of thanksgiving for a merciful Father in Heaven who had heard my plea and known my heart and provided a way for our family to be together, for us to set righteous paths before them and for my need to be refilled when Ben spoke up his words bringing tears to my eyes. Mama,” he said, “I wish we could watch Conference everyday!

Wait! What month is it?

It feels like just yesterday when the snow had melted (wait it was just yesterday....), we were outside raking up the left over leaves off the ground, and getting ready for spring. Here is the Comedian and NT using the fronds from the Christmas Tree to become turkeys as they strut around on the snow-less front yard.

Evidently Mother Nature became confused by their pretending to be turkeys and thought that it must be almost Thanksgiving again. So we woke up to a change in the weather.

All the boys groaned and wanted to know who prayed for snow this time. Everyone here denies being the culprit. Even Monster Baby shook his head emphatically when the Engineer gave him the third degree wanting to know if he had prayed for the snow.

So just want you to know that if you keep praying for snow my Engineer is going to find you and he has some pretty tough questions prepared for you as he says, "in regards to their intentions, Mom. Somebody out there doesn't know how great Summer is going to be!"

Snow, Snow, go away!
Don't come back until after April or May!

More Benjaminisms...

"Mama, do you know what I want to drink with my lunch? Hot chocolate because my brain needs warmed up. I know we don't have hot chocolate on just any snow day but this is a super duper cold snowy day and my brain is cold and so is my body, so I need some hot chocolate to warm me up"

"Wow! I think it is almost Christmas again!"

"When I go to storytime after storytime I'll buy a book and a movie and a dinosaur movie with my library card. First I have to take my only one movie back, but my Christmas dinosaur movie can stay here because it isn't a library movie it is a Christmas movie from Santa and it can stay here"

"Mama can you snuggle me when I'm watching the show"

"Mama see these straight pretzels that I got from Emma's house? They taste better than those curly knotted up ones you buy. They are better for me because I'm a straight boy and not a curly knotted up boy. So next time buy straight pretzels so I'll know you love me okay?"

Flying South....

Last Tuesday I went for a walk with the two youngest boys around 8:30 in the morning it was so warm we only wore jackets. There is a wetland restoration area less than a block or so from our house and they have a paved walking trail all the way around it. So we went on a hunt for signs of spring....You'll be amazed at what we saw

A pair of ducks swimming in the river
Grass peaking out from under the melting snow
Puddles to splash in
A few Robins and other early spring birds flying through the trees
Signs of a couple of beavers starting to build a new home
Fuzzy buds on a few trees
and even a Mosquito that tried to bite my cheek

It was very reassuring that Spring was definitely on her way. It was totally the best thing for the winter doldrums that we've all been facing. I didn't post about it then because I hadn't brought along my camera and wanted to go back and get some pictures to go along with it all....

Saturday we did some yard clean-up and I even put the snow shovels away in the shed and set the leaf rake next to the porch. Well this morning we woke up to a blanket of snow, so I set off with my leaf rake to make a semi-path over to the shed to get the snow shovels out.

The Comedian says, "It will be Christmas again soon!" He's uber excited because his birthday is just a couple weeks before Christmas.

And I just decided to go out and get some wood and start a fire to warm us all up and saw a large V of Canadian Geese headed south again....so maybe he's onto something.

I knew there was a reason that I hadn't put the last of the Christmas decorations in the eves....

Oh the weather outside is frightful...but the fire is sure delightful.....

Use the Force. . . .

Star Wars is having a revival around our house lately. And my Lego Engineer has been inspired. He really wants me to share with you some of his incredible creations. Above is an x-wing...or I've just been corrected. It's knick-name is "the long eyed fighter" and the code name is the "4 eyed ship that drops off clones".

This one was crafted by the Comedian. It is a clown ship...or so I've been told.

Here is a group picture of many of the creations.

And this one was made especially for Monster baby (who is less of a baby each and every day). So he wouldn't feel left out of the zooming and zipping flying all over the house.

So now just remember to wear your shoes inside my house because the pain caused from stepping on one of these things is excruciating!

New Snow Elimination Plan.....

My Engineer has decided that if Mother Nature won't cooperate in removing the snow that he'll take it into his own hands. here he is using his shovel to remove the snow from our yard. I'm not sure what he is going to do when it snows again later this week.

While the boys were getting into the van the other morning to go to school he and the Comedian were arguing. I came in on the middle of the argument and the Comedian was already in tears and wanting to know if big brother made all the praying rules because he felt like he still wanted to pray for more snow. I'm not sure that my Engineer totally agrees that we each get to pray for what will meet our individual needs. He is now lobbying for a new family rule that will prohibit any more praying for snow. Luckily for us he is not in charge of prayers for tonight's Family Home Evening, although he is the song leader. It will be fun to see which songs we will be singing tonight.

As for the mommy she is ready for warmer weather so we can get outside and play. I am truly getting tired of being cooped up inside these four walls.

No Need to Fear. . . .Super Dishwasher boy is here!

Ever since we instituted an allowance system where
the boys can earn a few coins for different jobs around
the house I have been blessed to have great helpers that are
always willing to pitch in when I need an extra hand.
Here 2 of the boys are splitting the 10 cent job of unloading the dishwasher.

My comedian reminded me that they'll wear their
capes and super hero gear for "No Extra Charge"

So if you need some extra household help, let me know.
I can even share with you the going rates.
However for you the costumes might cost extra!

Have you ever tasted a Pawdohwahp?

My little comedian has been telling stories and here is his latest.

Once upon a time there was a Pawdowahp. It lived in a pond. It felt the boughter (rhymes with daughter). A boughter is a kind of machine that lives on earth and it is kind of fuzzy. The boughter digged up the Pawdowahp with its big claws. Everyone heard it go, CRUNCH! Then the boughter flipped over and dropped the Pawdowahp. Then came a big Giant through the forest to the pond and it picked up the Pawdowahp and ate it. Soon the Giant said, "aaaaargh" and threw up the Pawdowahp into the deep pond water. The Giant cried and ran to find its mommy. He never ate another Pawdowahp. He always told his friends to Hang-dwop if they saw a Pawdowahp.

The End

With What Shall We Fix It?
